Singing River Nursing Residency Program Welcomes Spring 2026 Cohort

Nurses

Miss. Gulf CoastSinging River Health System recently launched the Singing River Nursing Residency (SRNR) Program in December 2025, designed to strengthen support, training, and long-term retention for nurses entering the profession. The Spring Cohort will officially begin February 16th and includes nearly 40 nurse residents.

“Singing River is excited to launch our new Nursing Residency Program, and we’re so grateful to these nurses for choosing us as the place where they’ll learn, grow, and thrive,” said Rachel Kemp, Chief Nursing Officer at Singing River Health System. “This program is tailored to help nurses grow more confident and comfortable in their chosen specialty through hands-on experience, mentorship, and meaningful support. As our nurses grow, so does the strength of their care, creating a positive impact on patients in our community.”

The one-year program serves as a bridge between nursing school to real-world practice, helping first-year nurses develop strong clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence while fostering peer connections and long-term career growth within the health system.

The Spring Cohort includes nurses entering a variety of specialties, including Emergency, Intensive Care, Labor and Delivery, and Medical-Surgical units. Participants represent several institutions, including Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, William Carey University, and The University of Southern Mississippi.

“Residency Week, the first week of the program, is really the heart of the experience,” said Gena Gray, Professional Development and Education Manager at Singing River Health System. “Residents are introduced to their peers, educators, and nursing leadership, and we walk through our commitment to them and what they can expect throughout the program. The remainder of the week is very hands-on, with skills training and mock scenarios designed to help them feel confident before stepping onto the unit.”

All new RN hires in their first year of practice are eligible to participate, including student nurses nearing graduation, newly licensed RNs, and early-career nurses transitioning to Singing River. By the end of the program, residents complete several required certifications, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Following completion of the residency program, Singing River offers continued professional development opportunities, including preparation for specialty certifications such as Board Certified Medical-Surgical (MEDSURG-BC) Nurse, Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), and Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN). Nurses may also pursue roles as mentors or preceptors, helping support future residency cohorts while strengthening collaboration and teamwork across the organization.
