Singing River Health System Promotes Healthy Heart Awareness

Singing River Health System (S.R.H.S.) kicks off American Heart Month with an employee Wear Red Day Friday, February 6th for National Wear Red Day. This is the first of a month-long look at heart health with community events and more offered and planned for February.

National Wear Red Day® was created by the American Heart Association, along with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, in 2004 to raise awareness that heart disease was-and still is- the No. 1 killer of women. S.R.H.S. is joining in the effort, asking employees to wear red and encouraging community members to wear red as well.

Singing River Health System will also be offering Heart Healthy screenings this month. For those in the community who are not seeing a heart doctor but want to know their heart health, two screenings are coming up on February 9th at the Ocean Springs Imaging Center and on February 23rd at the Pascagoula J.F. Turner Center.

These screening will help identify risk of heart attack, stroke, and aneurysm with five quick and easy tests: Carotid Artery Ultrasound, Carotid Intima Media Thickness, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound, Peripheral Vascular Disease Screen, and Electrocardiogram (EKG). This screening exam is to assist in the detection of potential risk for cardiovascular disease. Early detection is key. The entire screening takes approximately 15 minutes. Results will be interpreted by a local cardiologist and a report will be mailed to the patient within two weeks. Registration is required.
