Singing River Health System Hosts Blood Drives in Honor of Lieutenant Tom Spicer

Ocean Springs, Miss. – Singing River Health System is hosting blood drives to honor Lt. Tom Spicer, a beloved figure within the community and a dedicated member of Singing River’s Campus Police Department.
A familiar face to many, Lt. Spicer served his country as a Marine and worked in law enforcement for the City of Gautier for 21 years. In 2019, he joined Singing River’s Campus Police Department, teaming up with K-9 Jester to enhance the safety and capabilities of the police force.
Earlier this year, Lt. Spicer was diagnosed with colon cancer after experiencing some unusual digestive issues. Initially suspecting a hernia, Lt. Spicer underwent a CT scan, which revealed troubling results. Dr. John Bailey of Singing River Surgical Services referred him for a colonoscopy, where a tumor was discovered and subsequently removed. Unfortunately, further scans revealed that the cancer had spread to his liver.
Lt. Spicer recently underwent surgery to remove the spot on his liver and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Despite the challenging diagnosis, he remains optimistic about his treatment and recovery.
“I have great faith in my care that I will beat the cancer,” said Lt. Spicer. “Blood donations are essential not only for surgeries and emergencies but also for cancer treatments like mine. The generosity of donors provides hope and a chance for recovery.”
The blood drives will be held across all Singing River Hospital locations in August.
To donate in honor of Lt. Spicer, please visit SingingRiverHealthSystem.com/blood to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are honored first. Donors are encouraged to eat a meal beforehand and bring a valid driver’s license or identification to donate.
