Shuckers want kids to hit the books

The Biloxi Shuckers are helping more than 10,000 students on the Coast hit the books.
It was a very excited crowd at Bayou View Elementary School in Gulfport today as Shuckers mascot Schooner the Seagull helped announce the baseball organization’s new reading campaign.
Students have to read six books. Once their reading log is verified by a teacher they can turn it in to MGM Park box office for a game seat to a Shuckers game.
A group of second graders tell News 25 they are up for the challenge because reading is something they really enjoy. Second grader Anna Catekaretas said, “I like reading because I like to know what’s next.” Second grader Louise McCabb said, “I like reading because when I read I feel like I am in a different world.” Second grader Jackson Williams said, “I like reading because it’s fun.”
Biloxi Shuckers Broadcasting and Media Relations Assistant Erik Bremer said, “I think it’s important to establish what we stand for and literacy, reading, and community outreach is something that we really feel strongly about.”
Qualifying students will also get the chance to be in an on-field parade before the game.
