Shuckers’ New GM Preparing for Season
The Biloxi Shuckers remarkable season was one of the biggest highlights on the Coast last year. The Shuckers went from spending months on the road with no home to coming one win short of winning a Southern League baseball championship. During the offseason, former general manager Buck Rogers resigned but the Shuckers have now named his replacement. News 25’s Bryan Kennedy introduces us to the organization’s newest head man, Chuck Arnold.
There’s a new man taking over the reins for the Biloxi Shuckers. The team’s new general manager, Chuck Arnold, says he is ready to go. The 35-year-old Tennessee native is no rookie when it comes to running the show. He tells News 25 the key to continuing the Shuckers’ success is the fans. “We want our fans to have a good time, win or lose. So, that’s going to be our focus is that fan experience and we want to hear from our fans. We want to know what we’re doing well. We want to hear where we can improve and we want ideas.”
Arnold spent eight years as general manager of the Johnson City Cardinals, the Appalachian League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. He has spent the past two years as vice president of sales for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. He helped turn a struggling organization into one that was selling out. With crowds that averaged nearly 4,500 fans in Pensacola, the Blue Wahoos ranked second in the league in attendance.
Even though Arnold was busy in Florida, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t keeping an eye on the Shuckers. “I can’t give enough credit to the staff and for what they were able to do with the challenges they faced and only having half a season. I had the opportunity to come to a couple of games and what really stood out was the passion of the fan base. We came over during playoffs and the fans were just so loud and excited,” said Arnold.
While the Shuckers have chosen the man to lead from up top, they’ve also chosen the man to lead the Shuckers’ dugout. Arnold says he’s eager to get things started with former Brewers’ first base coach and new Biloxi Shuckers manager Mike Guerrero. “The Brewers have a great farm system, so we know they’ll field a competitive team. With Mike, really just getting together to see how we can work to get the players involved in the community and that kind of thing,” said Arnold.
Will Arnold and Guerrero be a hit? We’ll see when Shuckers baseball returns to the Coast in April.
The Shuckers’ season will begin with an exhibition game against the Milwaukee Brewers at MGM Park on April 2nd.
