Short-Term Rental Advisory Board meeting in Pass Christian

The Short-Term Rental Advisory Board passed a plan on to the Pass Christian aldermen that would prohibit people from having short term rentals, such as Airbnb and Vrbo, in residential neighborhoods.

New rentals would have to be in the central business district, which is the area from Fleitas and Henderson Avenue, and between Highway 90 and West 2nd Street.

Those with short-term rentals in residential neighborhoods already will be grandfathered in and get to keep their unit.

However, they won’t be able to turn property outside of those bounds into short-term rentals without petitioning the board.

This plan was met with protests.

The city put a cap on the amount of short-term rentals at 150 and emphasized that even without this ordinance, there are only 20 spots left. Director of Planning and Zoning Derek Duckworth said, “To me, I guess my take away from tonight is we need to go back to the drawing board, but we don’t need to go back to the drawing board by erasing the entire board. I think that there needs to be compromise and negotiation. And there is a lot of times where in my position, and in other political positions, that you’re going to get that pushback from the citizens.”

The board of aldermen will now review the plan before having another meeting on the subject.
