Shell Starship fuel efficient tractor trailer
Today, the Shell Starship truck made its way to Love’s Travel Stop in Biloxi as part of their week-long coast-to-coast tour, showcasing its fuel efficiency capabilities across the United States.
The aerodynamic big rig was designed over a three year time frame with the goal of setting fuel efficiency records for class 8 semis. The truck was developed in conjunction with the Airflow truck company, a Connecticut-based engineering firm.
It features a custom-designed cab combined with several advanced technologies which improve efficiency, reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. Shell Rotella Global Brand Manager Megan Pino said, “We believe we have a global energy challenge, but yet no one single solution is going to solve our issues. So, we wanted to be able to demonstrate what is possible to lower co2 emissions using technology available today. So, this is a diesel truck which is obviously the most commonly used in the industry, hauling freight is critical to keep our nation going, but we think we can do it in a more efficient manner.”
The performance of the truck, including freight-ton efficiency and fuel economy, will be measured along the way and the results will be shared publicly on June 5th.
