Sharing Made Simple
Local farmers and gardeners in the Moss Point area are sharing the gift of fresh, local eating with a healthy new project aimed at reducing waste while sharing with those in need. It’s called Sharing Made Simple.
The new program bridges the gap between food insecurity and abundant local food sources by collecting surplus produce from local farms and gardeners that might otherwise go to waste. Seniors or families with children will have access to fresh, healthy, locally grown food who otherwise might not be able to afford or grow it themselves.
Organizers hope to encourage community residents with gardens or fruit trees to get involved in the fight against hunger. Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Chadwick Smith said, “Lots of Satsumas, lemons, herbs, pecans. We’ve had buckets of pecans come and those go pretty quick. A: it promotes healthy living and B: it gets people together so I think if we can do that, I think we’re doing something good.”
The Sharing Made Simple program is put on every Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Riverfront Welcome Center in Moss Point.
