Severe Weather Precautions

A strong low-pressure system to the west could bring severe storms to the area throughout the night. This severe threat could arrive in the form of hail, strong winds and even tornadic activity. News 25’s Kendra Turley has more on what to expect throughout the night and how to prepare.
As the year comes to an end, severe weather season for the southeast is slowly approaching. Harrison County resident Kevin Myers said, “Right here, being a block and a half from the beach, that’s not very much to kind of diminish the wind from coming in. I do see a lot of wind activity, even on a normal day.”
Recent forecasts show the possibility of strong winds, heavy rains, hail and tornadic activity right here along the Coast. Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy said, “There’s going to be a change in temperature that people need to be aware of. You may start off with your rain coats and umbrellas but you may also need to have a light jacket as it passes through.”
Due to El Nino, we received a break during hurricane season but an increase in severe weather this winter is expected throughout the southeast. “This is one of those winter fronts that come through during the fall-winter months that have potential in creating some heavy duty rain,” said Lacy.
One of Harrison County Emergency Management’s biggest concerns is the large amount of rainfall residents in low lined areas will see in a short period of time. EMA has sent out weather briefs to police, fire, public works, school officials and more warning them what to expect.
Sporadic power outages are anticipated throughout the night, so officials are encouraging residents to have back up batteries on hand. “Public safety, people on the road, school buses, all of that, we just need to be prepared for what Mother Nature throws at us,” said Lacy.
The Harrison County area is expected to receive two to four inches of rain throughout the night.
