Seniors celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at Lyman Senior Center
St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow and seniors at the Lyman Senior Center celebrated a day earlier with a lunch and a presentation on why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick’s Day is set aside to commemorate St. Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrate the heritage and culture of the Irish.
The seniors celebrated by eating Shepard’s Pie, which is a traditional Irish meal that was a filling and cheap meal for many Irish who needed to feed their families. Presenter Mary McCusker Thames said, “The reason for the green, it used to be St. Patrick was in blue until the conquering war and then it converted to the green. The flag used to have the harp, but now the flag of oak green, white, and orange has only been in existence for about 100 years.”
McCusker-Thames is an Irish American and says she enjoys being able to go around educating people on St. Patrick’s Day.
