Senior Matters: Richmond August Funeral Home Senior Events
Senior citizens can have a hard time finding places to gather and meet new friends, but they do not have a hard time finding their number on a bingo card.
Tuesday may just be another weekday for us, but for Richmond August Funeral Home it is much more. The funeral home puts on events for senior citizens in our community and it is making a difference. Richmond August Funeral Home Vice President Lasha August said, “We have an overwhelming positive response. The ladies and the attendees enjoy the different topics. This allows a time, at least once a month, that they can come and see other people and be happy.”
The seniors meet every Tuesday for bingo at 11 a.m. and monthly for lunch and learn where they discuss topics important to seniors such as healthy living and senior safety. These days have become special for attendees. Senior citizens can become lonely and depressed especially when they have lost a loved one. The main goal of these gatherings is to create a place to show elders the community cares. “We have seen personalities blossom, they come in a little timid at first because it’s like the first day of school. You know you go into it where am I going to sit? Who am I going to talk to? So we make sure it’s an inviting and welcoming environment,” said August.
August never imagined the funeral home would become a place of happiness, but she is excited with the response from senior citizens. “It’s such a blessing to be able to take something that we thought was going to be specifically for this one purpose and expand upon it and for it be a blessing to others,” said August.
