Senior Matters: Hurricane readiness

Of all the dangers Mother Nature brings, hurricanes can be the worst for our area and can be much worse for senior citizens.

August 29th, 2005, a day that is stuck in the minds of many South Mississippians, especially 76-year-old Susan Hunt. She lost everything in Hurricane Katrina because she was not prepared. “I was going to stay in the house on the property we’re on because in Camille the water only came up to the door so I figured we’d be good.”

Hunt took shelter at Biloxi High School where she comforted those who had lost everything. Little did she know this comfort was something she would need for herself as well. “I am very thankful that God put me where he did during Hurricane Katrina because in that it prepared me for what I came to, my loss.”

Hunt says that a concrete slab was the only thing left of her property after Hurricane Katrina, but coming back to it reminds her of how important it is to have a plan. “It’s all about your family and you. It’s nothing but stuff.”

News 25 spoke with Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy to get more information on how seniors can become hurricane ready. “Living here in paradise, of course, we have to be prepared for all hazards. Know that if you’re in a low-lying area you need to get out.”

Lacy also says to make sure you have a go-bag with water, clothing, medical records on hand, so that in a moment’s notice you can leave with it. Keep at least five to seven days’ worth, if not more, of the medications you take ready to go. If you do not have transportation to evacuate, call the Coast Transit Authority to pick you up prior to the storm. “You’re not a bother. Every life matters when we have a disaster and we want to get everybody into a safe place,” said Lacy.

Remember to have your medication ready with a go bag and do not be afraid to seek shelter. It is better to be prepared than to be sorry.
