Senators speaking up for local seafood
Mississippi’s U.S. senators, Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, are taking a stand for American shrimpers and seafood markets.
The senators have reached out to the International Trade Commission about extending anti-dumping duties that limit the amount of frozen seafood sent into the United States through international traders. These regulations have been in place since 2005, keeping local shrimpers prices competitive as they harvest from the Gulf of Mexico and assuring the availability of fresh, high quality seafood.
In their letter to the ITC, the senators say: “The anti-dumping duty orders currently in place have been successful in providing the domestic shrimp industry an opportunity to compete on a level playing field. Preservation of these important trade remedies is necessary to ensure the long-term viability of the U.S. industry as we feel confident that injury to American shrimp harvesters and processors will swiftly resume should the orders be revoked.”
