Senator Hyde-Smith files ‘Save our Shrimpers’ Act

In the Senate Wednesday, Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith introduced the ‘Save our Shrimpers’ Act.

This is legislation aimed at preventing taxpayer dollars from helping finance foreign shrimp farms.

Hyde-Smith says Coast shrimpers have struggled to compete against heavily subsidized foreign producers for years.

The bill would prohibit U.S. funding from supporting international loans tied to foreign shrimp farming, processing, or exports.

The legislation is backed by the Southern Shrimp Alliance and Mississippi Commercial Fisheries United as supporters continue pushing to protect Gulf Coast shrimpers and processors from foreign competition.
