Security cameras possible for Biloxi Bay Bridge
Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran believes a watchful eye in the sky could be the key to making the Biloxi bay Bridge safer.
“We would like to have cameras on each ends of the pathways,” said Mayor Moran. “They would have a transmitter and relay here at the Yacht Club. And that would be streaming video and be stored up to three weeks or longer and could be monitored and viewed from our police department.”
The issue of bridge safety really came to a forefront after a woman reported that she was sexually assaulted on the bridge one night back in November.
But there is a price to pay for the new safety measures. Mayor Moran says the cameras would cost the city about 10 thousand dollars. Since Ocean Springs and Biloxi share the bridge, Mayor Moran says the two cities are working together to come up with ways to fund the project.
Whether you’re walking, biking, running or just enjoying the view, the Bay Bridge is the perfect place for all these things. And until cameras are installed, the mayor encourages you to have your own safety practices.
Until Mayor Moran can raise the funds needed for the cameras, she is partnering with community groups to raise awareness.
“It’s a local gulf coast wide group called WAVE”, said Mayor Moran. “Women Against Violence Everywhere. They were very outraged by the incident some months ago and have already had a bridge walk to raise awareness."
