Second Annual VGA Tournament

The Fallen Oak Golf Course is the place to be for the second annual VGA championship.
News 25’s Laurene Callander reports on the deeper meaning behind this golf tournament for veterans.
The green was covered with red, white and blue Monday morning as 80 veterans teed off for the 2016 Veteran Golfers Association championship.
While some are taking a swing for the number one title, others use the game for much more. U.S. Army Veteran Matthew Spang said, “It’s a lot easier to just stay in my wheelchair and not put my legs on, but when there is a golf course, I want to play golf and I just put my legs on and I don’t think about it.”
Spang is a U.S. Army veteran. He served five years and was deployed twice before he lost both his legs when the truck he was in hit an IED. “Never let somebody else tell you what you can do and what you cannot do because there’s people who told me that. ‘Oh, you can’t do this or can’t do that’ or ‘can’t shoot this type of score.’ I’m just out here trying to prove people wrong.”
Organizers of the tournament hope for continuous growth, giving more veterans the opportunity to get out on the green and enjoy more than just golf. VGA Co-founder Aaron Ojard said, “Most of the people that serve in the military are that type, a ‘go get ‘em’ type personality people. After their service ends, some of them, their fire goes out. They don’t have anything to put that competition toward. We’re providing that opportunity for them.”
This is the second annual VGA Tournament, but the first held at the Fallen Oak Golf Course here in South Mississippi.
