Sec. of State presents MS. Department of Marine Resources with $10M check

Secretary of State Michael Watson presented the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources with a Tidelands Trust Funds check for $10,314,561 on behalf of the Gulf Coast Legislative Delegation.

This amount represents the Tidelands Trust Funds amount collected during fiscal year 2022 for use during fiscal year 2023.

Revenues for the Tidelands Trust Funds is generated by leases on lands owned by the state in trust for the people of Mississippi and assessments in onshoring gaming operations.

Of the $10 million, about $7 million will be used for public access projects spanning Harrison, Jackson, and Hancock counties. Secretary Michael Watson said, “We’re thinking long term when you know you’ve got a continued source of revenue that is coming to the Coast, and that’s one of the things you have to be careful with along the Coast making sure we’re protecting those dollars to continue to reinvest those here on the Coast because when you do see the economic impact that they bring, you can’t argue that.”

As of now, the Secretary of State’s Office has transferred a total of $187,489,980 to the Mississippi Gulf Coast through the Tidelands Trust Funds program.
