SEC Media Days: Ole Miss Rebels

Gulfport native Matt Luke is going into his 18th season as either a player or coach in the Southeastern Conference. After all those years, the new head coach of the Rebels is finally checking SEC Media Days off his bucket list.

The former Admiral took to the mic for the first time this morning, coming off his first spring as the permanent head man at Ole Miss. Coach Luke dropped the interim title following his team’s Egg Bowl victory over Mississippi State, but was still met with a 2018 post-season ban from the Huge Freeze regime just four days later.

That means no bowl game for the upcoming campaign, but just like last year, Coach Luke says that’s nothing his team hasn’t handled before. “When we ended the season last year you could really tell how far we had come from a culture standpoint. And I think what happened was, I think all the things that that group of young men had been through, it could do one of two things. It could either push you apart or bring you together, and I really think that everything that they’ve been through together really brought them together as a team. So I think with their mindset of playing for each other, they’re getting up every morning right now at 6 o’clock, four days a week at 6 o’clock in the morning and they’re putting in the work and they’re attacking this season and I really like the way they’re working and like the culture in our locker room right now.”

One of the most interesting questions from today’s media session: what was Coach Luke’s dream car when he was 16? The answer: a Ford F-150.
