Seaside Shuffle in Long Beach

The University of Southern Mississippi is taking steps that benefit a healthy lifestyle and allows students to enjoy the Coast’s beauty at the same time.
The very first “Seaside Shuffle” was a chance for Southern Miss staff, faculty and students to get some exercise and walk along the beach. The group started at the south lawn of Gulf Park campus in Long Beach and walked about a mile and a half. A grant awarded to the university from Blue Cross helps the campus host fitness and exercise initiatives like this. Kim Beard with the University of Southern Mississippi said, “A lot of people think that fitness needs to be really structured and organized. This really gave people an idea that fitness can be just no equipment, no pre-planning, you just go grab a friend, grab your tennis shoes, head out to the beach because what other campus is right on the beach in Mississippi?”
The coordinator says they usually host a different themed walk every month, but this is the first time the USM fitness group ventured off campus.
