Scenic byway groundbreaking ceremony in Hancock County
Hancock County finally broke ground for their scenic byway pedestrian project that will end by the Silver Slipper Casino on Beach Boulevard.
With the swift move of a shovel, officials break ground on a project that’s been a long time coming, a project sure to bring a new attraction for Hancock County residents wanting to get active. Hancock County Board of Supervisors President Blaine Lafontaine said, “This project started originally back in 2011. It’s been in progress quite some time and like I said, this would be the last phase as they’ve made other enhancements along our beach fronts.”
At the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive, you can see where the sidewalk ends. This will be the continuing point for the largest single investment in the scenic byway. “This project was roughly over $750,000, a little over $600,000 was Federal Highway Administration funds, 150 being Department of Marine Resource funds,” said Lafontaine.
A little more than one mile will be added to the four mile pathway, which will be efficient for bike riders, runners, and bring in more tourism to the community. Hancock County Greenways and Byways Committee Chair Allison Anderson said, “Now, Harrison County has added on another 23 miles to form a really long scenic byway all along the beach. It’s a tremendous opportunity for people to come and do a marathon or train or do a kayak or bike, walk, run kind of experience. It just opens up a lot more opportunities for recreation.”
The pathway project is expected to be completed by the end of summer.
