Scammers impersonate Harrison County Sheriff’s Department
Last month, we let you know about scam calls impersonating the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.
Unfortunately, these scammers are getting smarter.
What started as a common phone scam that impersonated a deputy has evolved as these scammers find new ways to get what they want.
Previously, these scam calls came from an unknown number. Once someone picks up the phone, they discover they either missed jury duty or a court date, and they need to pay money or be arrested.
These scammers are now spoofing numbers associated with the sheriff’s department in an attempt to outsmart their victims.
Either way, the sheriff’s department does not collect fines like this.
“The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office is never going to ask for money over the phone,” said public information officer Deputy Hanna Hendry. “If you did miss court, or you did have a ticket that needed to be taken care of, it’s never going to be handled over the phone. So, if at any time someone is calling you, saying you owe money, you can go ahead and assume that is a scam.”
If you’re still not sure, hang up and go to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department so they can verify the information.
