Scam targeting people who lost their pets on the coast

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is warning about a scam targeting those who lost their pets.

The scam caller is pretending to work at the Humane Society as a surgeon or vet tech, telling the owner their pet was hit by a car.

The scammer demands thousands of dollars be paid for the surgeon to do surgery on the animal.

The Humane Society says someone reported the scam even spoofed their phone number.

HMMS wants to remind everyone they would never solicit veterinary expenses over the phone, also saying if an animal was hit by a car they would be treated immediately.

Anyone with questions is asked to contact HMMS directly by calling 228-822-3826 or by emailing admin@hssm.org.
