Saving Turkey Creek Program
Earth Day has passed, but that doesn’t mean environmental consciousness isn’t still on some minds, especially for the kids of the Forest Heights Boy and Girls Club in Gulfport.
For about a year, these youths have learned about how to improve the environment around them. This program was started with the help of the Steps Coalition.
Their goal was to improve the water quality of Turkey Creek in the West Gulfport community. One way they see this can happen is to educate our youth.
The students learned to recycle water using rain barrels, recycling, and how to reduce air pollution. Those rain barrels were used in the new garden they have at the Boys and Girls Club.
Tonight, the kids showed their parents and other community members how they are ready to take what they learned and share it. “I hope people see that littering is bad and recycling water is good.”
“We did water barrels and it is important because we are watering our gardens. We are watering our plants.”
“Saving our community is important.”
“Just because we are little kids doesn’t mean we can’t make big differences in the world.”
The participants also got a chance to promote what they learned by coming up with some slogans and painting on canvases to display at tonight’s event.
