Satsumas begin blooming at Mert’s Satsumas in Gulfport

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- After a winter filled with freezing temperatures, many along the Gulf Coast were left wondering what it would mean for local crops, but now as spring arrives there are signs of hope.

WXXV News 25’s Everett Ganier Jr. takes us to Mert’s Satsumas in Gulfport as the satsumas are starting to bloom again.

At Mert’s Satsumas, the signs of spring are finally returning. After a winter that brought unusually harsh freezes to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, there were real concerns about whether this year’s satsuma crop would survive.

But now, rows of trees are beginning to bloom, bringing some relief.

The blooming stage is critical as these small white flowers will eventually turn into the fruit many look forward to each season.

While it’s still early in the season, growers here say these blooms are a positive sign and could mean a strong satsuma harvest later this year.

For now, all eyes remain on the weather as conditions are monitored day by day.
