Salvation Army Opens Cold Weather Shelters

If you went outside at all Tuesday, you probably noticed it’s gotten a lot colder. Temperatures are going to dip down into the mid-30s Tuesday night, conditions that could be deadly for those who don’t have adequate shelter. That’s why the Salvation Army has opened up shelters along the Coast.

The Salvation Army’s cold weather shelter in Gulfport wasn’t busy early in the day, but as the night wears on and it gets colder, it will probably be filled with people. The Salvation Army in Gulfport and the one in Pascagoula on Nathan Hale Avenue opened Tuesday around 4 p.m. to let people in. They open these shelters any time the temperature gets close to or below freezing.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen temperatures this low in south Mississippi and it’s been a few weeks since cold weather shelters have been opened on the Coast. Anyone who wants to find a warm, safe place to stay can go to the Gulfport shelter or the Pascagoula shelter. The Salvation Army plans to have both shelters open Wednesday night as well.
