Salvation Army in desperate need of donations as resources dwindle
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) -The Salvation Army of South Mississippi is in need of donations for their food pantry.
The Salvation Army relies on donations to sustain its food pantry operations. Recently, the organization has seen a significant decrease in the amount of donations.
Many families who rely on the pantry from time to time may have to be turned away if they can’t manage to receive more donations
According to the Mississippi Food Network, about 1 in 6 Mississippians don’t have enough to eat. That’s about 480,600 people, with more than 1 in 5 children going hungry. This leaves Mississippi with the worst hunger problem in America.
When summertime hits, donations are hard to come by. But the summer is especially crucial, as many children don’t receive school meals to supplement their diet.
For those looking to donate, the most helpful items are non-perishable, shelf-stable foods that are nutritious and easy to prepare. Ideal donations include canned fruits, vegetables, and proteins, as well as pasta, rice, peanut butter, and breakfast cereals.
