Salidrone replaces data buoy in California

Buoy

Salidrone and NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center announced today that a moored weather buoy in Monterey Bay in California has been replaced with a Salidrone unscrewed surface vehicle.

The announcement was made in Biloxi at the Oceans 2023 Gulf Coast Expo at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum Convention Center.

The Salidrone USV was deployed in August and has been on station delivering data since September 1st. It is expected to remain on station through June 2024. The USVs are powered by wind and solar, reducing the carbon footprint.

The buoy, part of NDBC’s Coastal Weather Buoy Observing System, was moored 24 nautical miles south-southwest of San Francisco off the Coast of Half Moon Bay.

With storms approaching the Coast, it is known as a critical area for the National Weather Service. The defunct buoy has been completely.
