Saints Report: New Orleans stuns Carolina, 20-17, thanks to last-second field goal

NEW ORLEANS, La. (WXXV) — The New Orleans Saints played host to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, and the home team came away with the 20-17 victory thanks to some last-minute heroics.

The Panthers punched first, but the Saints tied things up on a four-yard touchdown by Devin Neal with just under four minutes until halftime.

After adding a field goal to go up 10-7 at the break, Carolina would push that lead to 10 with a scoring pass from Bryce Young to Jalen Coker.

Saints kicker Charlie Smyth drilled a field goal to make things 17-10 late in the third quarter, and then, the magic happened. Quarterback Tyler Shough found Chris Olave in the end zone with just under 2:30 remaining in the contest to tie things at 17.

Good offense turned to good defense, as the Black and Gold forced a quick punt to get the ball back with 57 seconds left.

New Orleans pushed downfield before Shough took it himself and was rocked, the hit would be called an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Panthers. Benefitting some from that 15-yard gain, Smyth hit a 47-yard game-winning field goal with two seconds left, and Caesars Superdome would erupt.

The Black and Gold will play its last home game on Sunday, December 21st, as the franchise welcomes the New York Jets at noon.
