Saints’ defense recharged for 2018

At the risk of this being too soon, we all remember the Minneapolis Miracle. The brilliance of Drew Brees going all for naught and one of the most inexplicable defensive gaffes in NFL history, costing the New Orleans Saints a trip to the NFC championship game.

But two days in to mandatory mini-camp, the infamous play appears to be a distant memory.

Instead, the Black and Gold are choosing to focus on the positives like their much improved defense a year ago.

During the regular season, the Saints were 10th in the league in points allowed per game, night and day compared to being ranked 31st in that same category in 2016.

Even though it’s still hard to get past the ‘what ifs’ of last year’s disappointment, defensive leaders like Sheldon Rankins are embracing the clean slate. “I think we’re going in the right direction. I think everybody still has that hunger from last year. We obviously know how last year ended, so we just used it as fuel all off-season, everybody has come back with a great mindset. Active, ready to work, taking coaching and going out there and trying to apply it as best as possible and we’re taking ourselves in the right direction. Obviously, we’re not there yet. It’s early, but I definitely like what I’m seeing so far.”

The Saints conclude their three-day camp at 1:20 p.m. tomorrow.
