Safety tips for using heating devices
Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan reminds us of the proper ways to stay safe while using heating devices.
Chief Sullivan says that while devices such as space heaters are relatively safe, it is always important to take proper precaution when using them.
When turning on a space heater, make sure there is no flammable material within reach.
The heat from the machine can burn cloths such as bed sheets and clothing and catch them on fire.
Chief Sullivan also recommends to check if the machine is in proper working condition and has proper safety devices.
Chief Sullivan says to make sure the wiring is properly working and that your home has a working fire alarm. “Any time that you live in an apartment complex then check and make sure that you have the proper safety stuff in that apartment complex. Make sure that people aren’t removing batteries out of smoke detectors; make sure that they work. Work with the management. Work with people that are responsible for maintenance, and take it serious.”
If a fire does occur, it is important to close doors behind you to help prevent smoke from flowing into other rooms.
