Safety and Security Summit at USM Gulf Park

Security is a top priority at high schools nationwide. Many of them were represented at USM’s Gulf Park campus to discuss and share ideas and methods about safety on campus.

As our environment and threats surrounding sporting events change so do the methods and practices put in place to prevent security issues. Today, the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security continued their second annual summit today to address just that, with a focus on high schools. The conversation included school officials, local law enforcement and first responders as well.

Amy Skeens-Benton is the assistant principal at Carmel High School in Indiana. She said, “Obviously, safety and security is number one. If you would ask any parent or anyone who comes to an event ‘are you more concerned about your child’s test score or about their safety?’ And you know what? Safety is number one and so that’s our focus. That’s why we’re here and I’m really excited to take back things that I’ve learned here. I’ve been able to share some things that we’ve done. It’s just really been a great experience.”

The three day event wraps Friday at 11 a.m.
