Safe return order amended and in effect until August 3rd

Today, Governor Tate Reeves amended the state’s safe return order in an effort to combat the continued rise in COVID-19 cases.

After consulting with state health experts and looking at the state’s coronavirus data, new restrictions on group gatherings and bars are in place.

Social gatherings are now limited to 10 or less indoors and 20 or less outdoors.

Meanwhile, bars can only sell alcohol to seated customers and no alcohol can be served at bars or restaurants from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Additionally six more counties were identified as hot spots in the state including Calhoun, Holmes, Lamar, Montgomery, Winston, and Yalobusha counties.

The governor talked about the importance of these new measures in a press conference today. “By far, the group driving these higher numbers, we know, is people in their 20s. I’ve been talking for at least a week about wanting to do something to curb the spread amongst young folks that are going to bars and making careless decisions. I take no great pleasure in announcing this, but I think it’s critically important.”

Another executive order issued by Reeves today extends the suspension of work search requirements until August 8th and other unemployment benefits until September 26th.
