Running across the nation one state at a time
This weekend, running was the name of the game. While thousands of people laced up their shoes and braced the conditions, one person really stood out.
News 25’s Kristen Anzuini has the touching story of one marathon runner who is trying to make his way across the nation.
Defying the odds, one step at a time, Daniel Chaplin is a 28-year-old runner who happens to have Down syndrome. This weekend, he ran his 16th half-marathon. “Very accomplished, it’s beyond words what just happened. It’s just wow,” said Daniel.
Besides beating his own personal records, Daniel’s goal is to run a marathon in every state. “I’m going to 50.”
Along with his determination, Daniel has a lot of support around him. His father, David, said, “For Daniel, we know some of his challenges are bigger than what some other people face. When he succeeds at something most people think he couldn’t do, it’s very rewarding.”
With the help of the 50 States Half-Marathon Club, Daniel’s dream of running in every state looks bright. David Clark with 50 States Half-Marathon Club said, “I think the main thing about helping him run races or being an escort is that it is just joy. People smile at him and say ‘congrats’ to him. He’s a wonderful individual, just a young man full of life.”
Running isn’t easy for anyone, but especially for people with Down syndrome. “We just believe you should allow your child to show you what they can do and show you what their interests are and you’ll be amazed at what they can accomplish.”
Daniel knows he is an inspiration to others like him. “It also means a lot to the people with Down syndrome in this world that a person with DS can complete a half-marathon.”
For anyone who has been thinking about lacing up their sneakers, Daniel hopes his story will give others the push that they need. “I hope you will be encouraged by this to go out and compete in one.”
