Roger Goodell, Sean Payton address official error
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is once again a trending topic in the Big Easy and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon.
He’s also a trending topic in Atlanta ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl 53, having finally addressed the New Orleans no call in public for the first time.
He eventually fielded several questions on the matter at this afternoon’s state of the NFL press conference.
However, Goodell didn’t issue the Saints any kind of sincere apology and he did a masterful job of side-stepping questions pertaining to any kind of punishment for the referees in question.
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton also held his end of the year presser today, still searching for closure in the most human way possible. “What was it now, a week and a half? Feels like it’s been longer than that. I would say honestly after the game for two-to-three days, much like normal people, I sat, probably didn’t come out of my room, I ate Jeni’s Ice Cream and watched Netflix for three straight days.”
Goodell said, “It’s a play that should be called. We’re going to make sure that we do everything possible to address the issues going forward and see if there are improvements that can be made through instant replay or anything else. I understand the emotions. It’s important as Commissioner and all of our staff, which several of us have done is to hear that emotion, whether it’s frustration, disappointment, anger. But we also know our officials are human.”
When asked if he considered using his authority to overturn the result of the NFC championship game in favor of the Saints, Goodell said, “absolutely not.”
