Road work projects impacting traffic in Harrison and Hancock counties
Road work in Harrison and Hancock counties is impacting commuters and businesses in the area.
Coming off Interstate 10 at Diamondhead, you’re met by construction, cones, and traffic making the area very congested
While city officials are calling the road work a necessary growing pain, many businesses and residents in Hancock and Harrison County are having their daily commute significantly impacted. “There are no signs telling us where to turn, they haven’t been posting a lot about the days of construction, they haven’t been working late hours or on the weekends when we think they would work. If you don’t live up here you don’t know the side streets or the back roads to get through everything.”
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is currently working on widening the bridge above I-10 and building three roundabouts on Gex Drive.
This construction has fully shut down roads that lead to businesses like Styles by Rita —whose customers have been impacted by the road work.
Stylist Chanda Prewitt said, “To some businesses I have noticed it and we here of course our customers have complained about it. It’s not a decrease as much as it’s an inconvenience because it causes a few complications like late appointments and a few cancels because they’re nervous about the way they have to go.”
Businesses and residents of Hancock and Harrison County can expect more interruptions as construction on the $17 million dollar project isn’t expected to wrap up until 2026.
