River Flooding Concerns in Biloxi and Gulfport
In certain parts of Gulfport and Biloxi, it’s hard to see where the Biloxi River ends and the street begins, even as the Biloxi River begins to recede. The Biloxi River was recorded at 16.7 feet around 7 this morning. It crested at 17 feet. The flood stage is 12 feet.
Residents in the area tell News 25 this is not out of the ordinary and Biloxi police are still patrolling the area. They are warning residents to stay off the road, especially on Lorraine Road. Gulfport resident Phil Pelman said, “This is pretty bad. It come up real quick, in just a matter of an hour or two. It was bad, but I have seen it a little worse.”
Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said, “It is better not to go across it. The road there, some of it could be sunk. There could be a lot of things there in the water that you can’t see. Even down here, some of that water is, I’m not saying it is swift enough to move your car but it certainly can drown you out.”
A barricade sits on Lorraine Road in front of Coalville United Methodist Church that says ‘road closed due to deep water.’
