Retiring Old Glory at West Harrison High School

It’s time to retire Old Glory. Today, the JROTC Hurricane Battalion Center at West Harrison High School held a flag retirement ceremony for the flag that has flown at the school for the last ten years.
When the U.S. flag becomes worn, torn, or faded, it’s time to replace it with a new flag and the old flag should be retired with all dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag.
The traditional way is to cut out the blue with stars, then cut every red and white stripe and burn it individually. Senior Army Instructor Samuel Smith said, “The flag represents what this country is all about and that it should be treated to the very end with dignity and honor.”
During the ceremony, the Daughters of the American Revolution presented a new flag and one cadet from West Harrison High and one from Long Beach received an Outstanding Cadet of the Year award.
