Resurrection Catholic prepares for Class 1A Volleyball State Championship!

Resurrection Catholic is heading to Clinton with a state championship in its sights as the Eagles prepare to compete in the MHSAA Class 1A Volleyball State Championship.

The Eagles punched their ticket to the title match Monday, sweeping Salem 3-0 in the South State championship to keep their season alive.

Resurrection Catholic has reached the South State championship in each of the past three seasons but fell short in the last two title matches. This time, the Eagles have another opportunity to finish the job and bring home a state championship.

With five seniors on a 12-player roster, Resurrection Catholic enters the final match with experience, determination and plenty of motivation. For those seniors, Friday’s championship presents one last opportunity to leave their mark on the program.

The Eagles last won a state championship in 2020 and will look to bring another title back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

As they prepare for the biggest match of their season, members of the Resurrection Catholic program reflected on their South State championship victory and discussed the team’s strengths heading into the state championship.

“Monday night was so exciting. We’ve been working towards this for months now and just to see it happen and the excitement on our fans faces, our student section, and especially our players was just wonderful,” said Head Coach Kelly Jordan. “The last time we won a state championship, four of our seniors were sixth graders. They didn’t actually get to play, but they were able to witness the older girls they looked up to and they’ve been talking about it ever since. Every year they say we’re going to make it, so it’s just really exciting to see it happen for those four girls and all of the girls.”

“People are doing their jobs,” said assistant coach and long time head coach Keith Tucker. “This team is not just one or two players. Everybody has a job and everybody does a good job and that’s what I like about this team. It’s a well rounded team and you can count on all of them.”

“We have a really close bond as a team which helps us on the court. We’re friends off and on the court, so that really helps,” said Mary Michael Miller.

“I also feel like we handle pressure really well,” said  Caroline Pulley.

“We trust each other a lot on the court,” said Abigail Panter.

“We’re all confident in our abilities,” said Millie O’Brien.

“We always encourage each other,” said Tatum Willcutt.

Resurrection Catholic will play for the Class 1A State Championship Friday at noon against Ingomar. Best of luck to the Lady Eagles!
