Residents react to Vancleave flooding

Severe storms moved across the area bringing heavy rain to portions of the area over the weekend, including in Vancleave.

Flood waters caused damage in the area warranting water rescues for other residents according to Michael Ryan. “It was pretty bad. Happened so fast too. Had to get rescue from around the corner here. My heart goes out to them, that was sad.”

“The stuff that I saw like when your house is almost under water, then its hard to prepare for that. Things unexpected happened”, resident Cynthia Shields shared and compared the flooding in certain areas to the damage caused by Katrina and says some things you just can’t prepare for.

Meanwhile, one local resident was pleased by the community’s response to these storms and is offering help for those victims. “Lot of people lost their belongings, but you know, we want everyone to know we’re here for them and our hearts go out to them. So anything we can do to help, we’re here. The fact that the community is coming together is huge and I think it speaks a lot for South Mississippi that we have a tight community and we’re willing to help everybody.”

The impacts in these areas will be felt for some time, but the help from others will assist in recovery efforts.

WXXV will stay on top of this story as those Vancleave residents and others across South Mississippi affected by these storms begin to build back.
