Residents Raise Money for Clean Air
A group of Pascagoula residents are halfway to their goal to make sure the air where they live is clean.
The Cherokee Concerned Citizens group live near a cluster of industrial plants in Pascagoula. They took matters into their own hands after noticing their common health problems could be linked to pollutants in the air in their neighborhood. Concerned Citizens raised $1,375 so far in efforts to supply people who live in the area with individual air testing equipment to make sure they’re not breathing harmful chemicals. Pascagoula resident Jon Fairley said, “Everybody deserves clean air, we need to breathe, we can’t function without air. If our air quality is bad, we’re going to be unhealthy, we’re going to be sick and we just need clean air.”
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality does a minimal amount of testing the air in the air, but Cherokee Concerned Citizens are asking the MDEQ to perform even more.
