Rescue Missions from Flooding in Gulfport
Police rescued over 20 people out of flooded homes off Northwood Hills Drive.
Water was at chest level for the officers, but that did not stop them from saving the lives of children, adults and even pets. Gulfport Police Department and Gulfport Fire Department used boats after trucks could not make it through the flooding.
Residents tell News 25 they have never seen flooding this severe before. Resident Oliver Silas said, “Within the past ten minutes, I mean, I’ve seen it rise at least four feet. It’s getting closer to the house. I’m really concerned about it.
“It’s never done this even with the bad storms. It really wasn’t this bad this morning. I’ve seen worse out here, but it’s never flooded like this,” said Gulfport resident Kayla Rushing.
Gulfport Police Captain Chris Ryle said, “It’s what we signed up to do to save lives, we all work together, we’re one big family and we won’t leave anyone behind. We’ll stay together and make sure we’re safe as well as the citizens.”
Those rescued were transported to Orange Grove Community Center.
