Rep. Jeffrey Hulum III gives insight into upcoming legislative session

The legislative session will begin on January 2nd, so News 25 will be checking in with our local legislators about how they’re feeling heading into next week.

We spoke with Representative Jeffrey Hulum III about what he is expecting to see on the agenda.

One bill that has garnered support from both sides of the aisle is the grocery tax bill, which aims to reduce the 7% grocery tax in Mississippi.

Hulum says this bill will be back on the table with a few tweaks.

Health care is also a bipartisan issue, as rural and smaller hospitals struggle to keep their doors open.

Hulum says he will be questioning the private school voucher and whether the money can be used for improving public schools.

Hulum is optimistic that the House of Representatives will be able to work together to move Mississippi along.

“We’re going to do our part working with our house colleagues, and making and seeing what’s fair across the board. Because we know it’s a give-or-take system, and we’ve got to work together,” Hulum said. “If we come up with something with our new speaker, Speaker White, and we put something together and vote for it, send it over there to the senate with the Lieutenant Governor – hopefully they make it happen. And it benefits all Mississippians.”
