Remembering Those Who Served

It’s important to remember why we honor this holiday each year, to remember those who have given their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy each and every day.
News 25’s Katarina Luketich takes us to this morning’s service at the Biloxi National Cemetery where hundreds gathered to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
This morning, Brandy Nehlig laid flowers in memory of her parents who are buried at the Biloxi National Cemetery, her father paying the ultimate price to protect his fellow Americans. “We have our freedom because of him and because of all the other men and women that have fought for us.”
Brandy was one of hundreds who showed up to honor those, like her father, who have given their lives for our country at a special ceremony at Biloxi’s National Cemetery. Veterans and civilians alike joined together in prayer and remembrance, singing along to the national anthem and listening to the somber playing of “Taps,” as keynote speaker Senator Roger Wicker shared a few words. Vietnam War veteran Glenn Bremenkamp said, “Senator Wicker gave a very stirring speech explaining Memorial Day.”
Senator Wicker, an Air Force veteran himself, reminded the crowd why we celebrate those who died so we can enjoy the lives we lead in this free country. “Today, what it meant for me was a chance not only to honor them, but to remind those of us that do survive that we need to be a country worthy of their sacrifice,” said Senator Wicker.
While this is a holiday enjoyed by many, Senator Wicker and others like Brandy Nehlig hope people take time to reflect on what this Memorial Day is all about. “To pause for a moment, as we did today is exactly what was intended for this day,” said Senator Wicker.
Tomorrow morning, volunteers are needed to pick up all the flags on the graves at the Biloxi National Cemetery. If you’re interested in helping out, you’re asked to meet at the cemetery tomorrow morning at 7.
