Remembering Shawn Martin
Homicide detectives are investigating the death of Shawn Martin whose body was found in Moss Point on April 13th.
In the meantime, friends and family were in Pascagoula remembering and honoring his life.
Shawn’s cousin, April Martin, said, “Shawn was just an awesome guy with a big heart.” These words are how those who gathered for this candlelight service are remembering 26-year-old Shawn Martin. “We want people to remember that number one, his mom loved him, his family loved him, his friends loved him, and his community loved him.”
Martin was last seen March 21st after he was supposed to be making a trip to Atlanta. On April 13th, a search team found Shawn’s body in a wooded area in Moss Point. His car was found on March 25th near that same area.
When his family found out about his passing it came as a shock, especially to Mylayjihah, Shawn’s nine-year-old daughter. “I cried and fell on the floor when I found out. I was sad. I didn’t know what to do.”
“We were devastated. We are a close knit family and, of course, we have never had anything like this happen before. As a family, we were just really broken.”
Moss Point police say they are treating this as a homicide investigation. Those loved ones of Shawn are hoping the investigation will bring answers so closure can come to this dark time in their lives. “He was a nice dad and a kind father and every time he met someone, he loved them. I don’t know why someone would want to do this to him because he was a kind person. They took his life for nothing.”
As the tears were shed by those at the candlelight service, they knew Shawn’s story would not be forgotten. Shawn’s high school coach, Vincent Jones, said, “Just because he is gone in body does not mean he is gone in spirit. So, we have to remember that spirit that he had.”
If you have any information on Shawn Martin’s death you are urged to contact Moss Point Police or Crime Stoppers.
Shawn’s funeral services will be held at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on May 4th at 2 p.m.
