Remembering Notre Dame High School Football
This afternoon in Biloxi former students from Notre Dame High School took a trip into the past to honor two of the best coaches in the history of high school football on the Coast.
A ceremony was held at the old Notre Dame gymnasium, the last standing building from the school which became Mercy Cross High School in 1982.
Many of the men and women who went on to shape the City of Biloxi and the entire Gulf Coast were in attendance to honor coaches Charles Hegwood and Tony Cintgran who they say made a positive impact which will leave its mark for generations to come.
Gautier Mayor Gordon Gollott said, “To me they were the best coaches that was ever here at Notre Dame High School. They kept us together. They knew what we were like and they wanted us to do our best and we performed for them the best way we could. It was an enjoyable experience.”
Vincent Kuluz is from the class of 1960. He said, “Coach Hegwood was the football coach and Coach Cintgran as the assistant football coach, but Coach Hegwood was probably the best offensive mind on the Gulf Coast and probably in the state of Mississippi.”
The 1960 Notre Dame football squad is best known as the only undefeated team in school history. The baseball team also won a state title that year under Coach Cintgran.
