Remembering the life of Larry Benefield
Former Harrison County Supervisor Larry Benefield died yesterday after a battle with cancer.
Harrison County School District’s newly appointed Superintendent Mitchell King spoke about Benefield’s life and legacy.
“Mr. Benefield was liked by mostly everyone he came in contact with.” Larry Benefield lived a long and full life. In 2008, Benefield became the supervisor of maintenance and transportation at Harrison County School District and held that position until his departure. “He was very good at what he did and he was very good at keeping the buildings up in Harrison County and he could always foresee a need for maintenance in a school building.”
He served 16 years as board of supervisor, serving from 1992 until 2008 before stepping down to run for Southern District Highway Commissioner. “He became a school board member in 1981 and he served for six years as a school board member and he was actively involved and very supportive of the school and the school district while he served in that role as a school board member.”
King says that Mr. Benefield was a mentor to many and always willing to help out in the community. “He was always interested in doing what was right for people and you can certainly look at that through his public service career.”
King says that Benefield will be missed by many. “There is going to be a hole in the Harrison County School District in the position that he was in. It’s going to be very hard to fill.”
