Remembering fallen Biloxi Officer Robert McKeithen

The Coast is in mourning today after the tragic loss of Biloxi Police Officer Robert McKeithen. Today, friends and family gathered at the Biloxi police headquarters for a prayer.

Biloxi resident Phyllis Bulaock said, “It is the time now to be unified more than ever. There is no room for hatred, but there is enough room for love.”

An emotional scene as family, friends, and community members gathered to honor the life of fallen Biloxi Officer Robert McKeithen. “We came out to support this lovely family and to support our police officers in their time of mourning. We’ve come to mourn with them.”

Mayor FoFo Gilich said, “It is a dreadful thing. We are memorializing Robert and his life of service. It’s fitting. It’s something that should be done for the people who serve.”

Officer McKeithen is remembered as a selfless, kind, and giving officer.

In front of the Biloxi Police headquarters, hands were held and prayers were prayed, a very different scene from the same spot where Officer McKeithen was shot and killed Sunday night. Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said, “Two nights ago, this was Hell. It was a place that none of us wanted to be. All of those men and women came together and we came to pick up Biloxi. We only did it with your support and we turned a really bad place back to a place of God.”

The large presence of people showed our one Coast and how it is, as Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson puts it, a place that is different from the rest. “I’ve said for years that the Gulf Coast is different than other communities across the state and other states. It is a community of fellowship. It is a community of togetherness and law enforcement on the Coast stands strong from bridge to bridge.”
