Remembering D-Day

It’s been 74 years since the massive military operation that was a turning point in World War II.

Decision Day or D-Day was June 6th, 1944 when allied forces led by the United States and Great Britain landed on the five beaches of Normandy to begin its push for Europe’s liberation from Nazi Germany control.

News 25 met with Thomas Dewey, a WWII veteran of Gulfport, he says to him D-Day means thinking of what his brother had to endure. “I think about my young brother and what a horrible life he had in the Navy doing that work because he talked about making North Atlantic escort trips with hundreds of cargo ships. They’re out there with axes chopping the ice off the front of their boat.”

The Seaborne invasion was the largest in history and involved strategic deception with decoys to throw off Germany’s ability to know when it would happen.
