Reliving Gehrig Conard’s emotional pitching gem
In the wake of the tragic passing of Stone Athletic Director Kevin Conard, his legacy continues to live on through his son Gehrig who is in the midst of writing a story that no one will ever forget and he’s still not ready to put down the pen.
After throwing a two-hit complete game shutout on Friday, just two days after losing his dad, the Tomcats went on to sweep Purvis in two games to punch their ticket to the South State Championship series for the first time in more than 30 years.
That means Conard will get the ball at least one more time this season starting Thursday against Sumrall.
But before the ace of the staff retakes the mound, let’s revisit the scene of an emotional Friday night with two outs in the top of the seventh, Conard closing in on not only the complete game shutout, but also an immaculate inning.
Nine pitches, nine strikes, three strikeouts, ball game.
Conard’s story has even started to gain national recognition from Barstool Sports who featured the lefty ace in a blog post on Saturday.
