Registration open for low-speed vehicles in Biloxi

After the Biloxi City Council voted to give a green light to allowing golf cart like vehicles on the streets of Biloxi back in April, registration for low-speed vehicles is officially open starting today.

Before being able to register, all low-speed vehicles must have rearview mirrors, safety lights, front headlights, brake lights, a horn, and a proper windshield.

Additionally, only electric vehicles that have a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour will be able to register.

Upon registration, drivers will be given maps which outline which roads low-speed vehicles are allowed on.

Once on the road, operators are subject to the same laws as all other motorists.

With these new vehicles about to hit the streets of Biloxi, Captain Brian Dykes has a message for drivers sharing the road. “Be aware that they’re a little bit more open of a vehicle and also they’re not built the same way cars are. So, in a crash, they’re not going to be as well protected– the people in these vehicles are not going to be as well protected. So, pay attention to the speed limit. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your eyes open for these low-speed vehicles.”

All low-speed vehicles must be inspected by the police department prior to registration. To set up an inspection appointment, contact the department at LVSregistration@biloxi.ms.us.
